Horror by definition is an intense, painful feeling of repugnance and fear, Something unpleasant ugly or disagreeable. The image that immediately pops into their minds is one of Freddy Krueger or maybe Michael Myers, while you were hoping for Shelley’s Frankenstein or Stevenson’s Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Movie names like Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, Saw, and many many others. The Bible, could easily be labeled horror, for where else can you find fallen angels, demonic possessions, and an apocalypse absolutely terrifying in its majesty all in one.

Horror is the feeling of revulsion that usually occurs after something frightening is seen, heard, or otherwise experienced. It is the feeling one gets after coming to an awful realization or experiencing a deeply unpleasant occurrence. By contrast, terror is usually described as the feeling of dread and anticipation that precedes the horrifying experience. In other words, horror is more related to being shocked or scared (being horrified), while terror is more related to being anxious or fearful (being terrified). Horror has also been defined as a combination of terror and revulsion.

The distinction between terror and horror was first characterised by the Gothic horror writer Ann Radcliffe. Terror is characterised by ‘obscurity’ or indeterminacy in its treatment of potentially horrible events – it is this indeterminacy which leads to the sublime. She says in the essay that it ‘expands the soul and awakens the faculties to a high degree of life’. Horror in contrast, ‘freezes and nearly annihilates them’ with its unambiguous displays of atrocity. She goes on ‘I apprehend that neither Shakespeare nor Milton by their fictions, nor Mr Burke by his reasoning, anywhere looked to positive horror as a source of the sublime, though they all agree that terror is a very high one; and where lies the great difference between horror and terror, but in uncertainty and obscurity, that accompany the first, respecting the dreader evil’

Gears of War is a 2006 third-person shooter video game developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios. It was initially released as an exclusive title for the Xbox 360 in November in North America, Australia, and most of Europe and included a “Limited Collector’s Edition” with added content and an art book titled Destroyed Beauty that detailed much of the game’s back-story. Despite the initial statements of Xbox 360 exclusivity, a Microsoft Windows version of the game was developed in conjunction with People Can Fly and released a year later, featuring new content including additional campaign levels and a new multiplayer game mode.

The game centers on the soldiers of Delta Squad as they fight to save the human inhabitants of the fictional planet Sera from a relentless subterranean enemy known as the Locust Horde. The player assumes the role of Marcus Fenix, a former prisoner and war-hardened soldier. The game is based on the use of cover and strategic fire for the player to advance through the scenarios; a second player can play cooperatively through the main campaign to assist. The game also features several online multiplayer game modes for up to eight players.

Gears of War sold over three million copies in just ten weeks and was the fastest-selling video game of 2006, and was the second-most played game over Xbox Live during 2007. The game has since sold over five million copies by September 2008. The game was well-received by critics, praising its gameplay and detailed visuals, and won several “Game of the Year” awards in 2006. The success of the game has led to the development of the Gears of War franchise, including the 2008 sequel Gears of War 2 and adaptations to books, comics, and a feature film on the way.

NECA TOY FAIR 2009 UPDATE by DARKFIGURES.COM

Every year it’s the same thing at Toy Fair: Groupies all over you, televisions flying out of hotel room windows, and someone’s always got something crazy going on with deli meats. How we managed to survive is anyone’s guess.

Nonetheless, let the word ring out across the land that NECA has emerged in high spirits from Toy Fair 2009 at the Javits Convention Center in scenic New York City, with our heads held high and a boat-load of new products and licenses revealed to the world for the first time!

The anticipation was palpable as we unveiled our expanding Twilight collection (you can see Figures.com’s story here, with a photo gallery here), which includes just about all the Edward Cullen you can handle and then some, The Watchmen were indeed watched — and the floor shook when new licenses were announced for the video games Dante’s Inferno and Dead Space, both from EA, and SCEA’s new masterpiece, God Of War 3!

Movie buffs lost their heads when they saw Boondock Saints righteous killers Connor MacManus and Murphy MacManus given the deluxe treatment in our very own Cult Classics line, and The Governator himself never looked better than he did on our shelf as part of our brand new Terminator 2: Judgment Day line! Cool Toy Review’s photo gallery has pics of the whole booth ready for viewing, including our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Villain Assortment (check out that Krang!) and Series 2 of our line based on the hit game/cultural marking point Street Fighter IV. Chun Li never had it so good.

And though all good things — even Toy Fair — must come to an end, this one didn’t before we showed off Series 1 & 2 of Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince and our figures based on Resident Evil 5 (check out Toy News International’s coverage here)! And just because it was beggin’ for more, holding our pant-legs so we couldn’t get away, we showed the universe Series 4 & 5 of our Gears Of War line! Dig the love from IGN. It’s okay, baby. We feel it too.
